Filling the space

brain_space
Today at work I told my friend Rachel, “The more I take off my plate the less time I have.”

This of course is in regards to the tremendous amount of work I recently took off my plate by cancelling my show. The statement struck me because it sounds so absurd.

Taking things off my plate should free me up to do other things right? After all, I was spending upwards of 40 hours per week on Freezerburns, that’s like a full time job worth of free time!

But that isn’t the case. In fact I find my mind and my tasks filling up my nights and weekends the same way it always has. So how can this be?

When we moved down to North Carolina in 2008 we moved into a house literally twice the size of our house in Massachusetts. The common thought with house size is you will always fill the space. That was certainly true for us. All this extra space magically had a tenant. It all seems to make sense. None of it seems out of place or there just to fill the space. And it was all stuff we already owned!

I imagine this is what’s happening to me right now. You see, my head didn’t magically enlarge. My day didn’t instantly stretch to 28 hours. What happened is my ideas and thoughts have room to spread out much like my furniture did.

It feels good to spread out. It feels good to keep the space filled.
