There have been a lot of articles being shared lately about the habits of highly successful entrepreneurs and business people. The most popular ones it seems lately concentrate on those that wake up “insanely early”.
While I’m not sure I can be considered “highly successful” I can tell you that most mornings I wake up insanely early and I feel incredibly productive. I was talking to someone at work today about my morning routine and thought I would share it in detail here.
Most mornings (I shoot for 4 times a week) I try to accomplish the following before 7:00 AM: Exercise, nutrition, work, and family. Here’s how I do it.
4:45 AM: Wake Up!
I don’t wake up pre-5 o’clock because I like to. My wake up call is based on how much time I need to get everything done. In order for me to fit in a run in the morning, I must be on the road by 5. This means I have 15 minutes from the time my watch alarm goes off to get dressed, drink some water, take my vitamins and supplements, and get running!
5:00-6:00 AM: Run!
I try to keep my runs to under 10k distances in the mornings. This is due to the fact that my longer run routes extend into areas with poor lighting and no sidewalks and it’s a safety issue. I have been running 10k distances just under 1 hour so this fits in nicely into this slot.
6:00-6:20 AM: Cooldown, lunchboxes, and breakfast
I can’t jump into a shower right after a run. It takes me awhile to cool down. To make the best use of my time I accomplish a number of things in the next 20 minutes. First, I put together the kids lunchboxes. My wife makes the lunches the night before and keeps them in the fridge. I fill up the water bottles, put the lunches and ice packs in the lunchboxes and set the table for breakfast. All of this saves me time when the kids wake up.
Then I make myself breakfast. It’s the same thing every morning: spinach, 4 eggs, and a tablespoon of olive oil. I saute 2 cups of spinach (the entire container seen above) and then make it into a 4 egg omelette. Sometimes I also add some bacon.
6:20-6:30 AM: Shower and a shave
Once I finish up breakfast I take my cold shower!
6:30-7:00 AM: Email, Community Management, Facebook, and Scheduled Tweets
Once I finish showering I get caught up on my email. I check my work and personal email, respond to Freezerburns comments on YouTube, check Facebook, and then schedule some tweets for the day.
7:00 AM: Wake Up Call!
I always dream of being like Mr. Mom and wake my kids up with a bugle. But instead I wake them up with great sensitivity lol!
7:00-7:45 AM: Daddy time!
This is the time where I can hang out with the kids, make them breakfast and talk to them about the day. Sometimes, we break out the music and have a little dance party. Sometimes, it’s getting some homework done last minute.
7:45-8:00 AM: The love of warm pants
I have this thing where I like to put on a pair of warm pants. So every morning I iron my shirt and slacks right before i put them on for work.
8:00-8:30 AM: Bus stop
Finally, on most days, I try to get to the bus stop to see my kids off to school. The bus comes, I kiss them goodbye, and then I head on to work.
It seems stressful and highly structured and that may freak you out. But it’s from many days of optimization of the process. I go to work with a smile on my face having seen my kids, getting a good run in and having a yummy breakfast.
What’s your morning routine like?
