5 Podcasts to Listen with Your Kids Now!

Back in the early days of radio, families would huddle around the magical radio cabinet and listen to news, talent show quality acts, and storytelling. It was like audiobooks, NPR, and hearing the audio from America’s Got Talent playing in the TV in the other room. It was an event. Those were the good ol’ days. Just kidding. That happened 50 years before I was even born. But I’ve seen it in movies and tv shows plenty of times to know that it was a great place to spend time with the family. You would see little Timmy laying on the floor listening while James sat in the chair smoking a pipe.

This was believe that the War of the Worlds was real. This wasn’t a case of lazy retiring on Facebook before validating sources. There wasn’t any Snopes to double-check that fact.

Well, dear readers, I am here to tell you that my kids are going through a tiny obsession with something similar right now. My kids are starting to obsess over podcasts. And even better, these aren’t podcasts listed in the “Kids & Family” section. These are adult podcasts that not only entertain but they educate.

Check out this awesome picture of my kids listening to the latest episode of Mystery Show before heading to the bus stop. This is a scenario where they rushed through breakfast and teeth brushing just so they could finish it before the bus came. The basket of laundry on the floor may not be as romantic as a warm living room setting and the iPhone on the floor may not project the sound as full as that antique wooden cabinet radio, but the intent focus in hearing every word is real.

Mystery Show

I have been a fan of Gimlet Media before it was named Gimlet! After all, I feel invested in the success of this company because of my obsession with the Startup Podcast that is now in it’s second season. But the Mystery Show, Gimlet’s third podcast (Reply All is kick ass too), is simply…awesome. Each week Starlee Kine solves a mystery that cannot be solved by the internet. My kids especially loved the episode entitled, Belt Buckle. Start with that one and I guarantee you will be hooked.

Stuff You Should Know

This podcast should probably be called, “Stuff you didn’t think you should know but are glad you now do know”. This podcast covers topics from “How Junk Food Works” to “How Skywriting Works”. Charles (Chuck) Bryant and Josh Clark have a great repoire with each other and they share super in-depth knowledge and trivia about the topics that make it easy to understand and easy to knowledge-drop at parties.

The kids love hearing the different topics ranging from technology to art to social change. I like that they get inspiration from amazing people.

America’s Test Kitchen

ATK is a great podcast that features technical advice, product reviews, and recipes for cooks. My family enjoys listening to this podcast to hear new tips and tricks but mostly we like to hear the hosts answer questions from people around the country.

The Allusionist

Do you geek out over words? Do you like to play games like Scrabble and Boggle? Then The Allusionist Podcast may be for you and your family. This podcast is great because it is so in-depth with history but still succinct and incredibly witty. Plus, your kids may pick up that bingo in Scrabble because of it.
