While I know he is a good student, a great listener, a rule follower, and a great kid there are always irrational fears that pop into mind when I go to these things. And none of them include the fear of busting my kneecaps sitting in those tiny chairs! I know they are irrational but they are real fears. Heck, you may have some of them too.

FEAR #1: My child is just like me.

What if my child is shy just like I was as a kid? What if he feels nervous about recess because he doesn’t have any friends? What if he gets teased because he’s a brainiac? After all, this is my kid! I created this human being! I hope my wife’s good genes overcame my bad ones. I hope that I did my time so that my children don’t have to. Isn’t that the goal for every parent?

FEAR #2: My child is behind in school because of me.

Have I been attentive enough and patient enough and conscientious enough with his after school learning? Have I defaulted too much to screen time activities instead of reading activities? Parenting is tough especially after a long day at work. Was I patient enough?

FEAR #3: My child is different at school than at home.

Like I said my kids are well-behaved good children. But there’s always a fear that they turn into different people at school. Are they self-confident enough to be themselves? Have we taught them to be proud of who they are and what they believe in?

My kids are doing well. And I am so proud of them. The great thing about irrationality is you have to acknowledge the lack of rationality to assign its irrationality. Boy, that sentence is horrible. I hope my kids don’t inherit my writing skills. Ugh.

Today my wife and I went to a parent teacher conference for our 7 year old son.
