One of the things I was confused about is why the Big Cypress National Preserve was not part of Everglades National Park. After all, they border each other and share the same diverse wildlife and ecosystem. But it turns out that the Big Cypress National Preserve is really the result of compromise.

According to the National Park website: “Everyone saw the importance of protecting the swamp, but many did not want this region merely added to nearby Everglades National Park that was created in the 1940s. Many felt that national parks were managed in a restrictive manner and access to the swamp would be lost. The resulting compromise created a new land management concept – a national preserve. An area that would be protected, but would also allow for specific activities that were described by Congress within the legislation that created the Preserve.”

The Big Cypress Swamp Welcome Center

We entered the park from the west taking the Tamiami Trail Road. Especially when thoughts of this come to mind:

Anyway, the Park Ranger recommended the Kirby Storter Roadside Park for a nice hike that wouldn’t involve being underwater. When I did my research planning for the trip I was excited about the following picture seen on this page of the National Park website:

I was so excited to show the kids a building with a giant airplane on top! Unfortunately, the plane was removed in the 1970’s. I hope the National park service revises the copy on the website as it does not explain the plane was removed.

Ng Family National Park #56

Today’s trip to Big Cypress National Preserve was our family’s 56th National Park site visited! We are planning on visiting 18 National Park sites in 2016!
