2013 Goals: January Check-In

Well, It is the end of the month and time for a check-in on my 2013 goals. Do you care about whether I achieve my goals or not? Most likely, no. But writing down my progress here on the blog and hitting the “Publish” button is my way of staying accountable. I hope that you find a way to hold yourself accountable for your goals whichever way you decide to do it.

As a reminder, my 3 goals were:

1. Re-Watch the complete series of Friends by December 31st, 2013

2. Run 750 miles by December 31st, 2013

3. Volunteer at the Food Bank 12 times by December 31st, 2013

So how did I do? Let’s start with the good.

I am way ahead of pace for my running goal of 750 miles. It works out to 62.5 miles per month and I exceeded it by almost 20 miles! In fact, at this pace I will be just short of 1000 for the year. That’s not a goal I’m trying to achieve. I am glad that I have found the time and the motivation to run often this month but I know there will be slow times this year where I will be glad to have this reserve. Until then, I am excited to be crushing this goal!

As for my overall health I am continuing (for the most part) to follow the 4-Hour Body Slow Carb Diet and have lost another 3 pounds this month which brings my grand total to 35 pounds lost (and counting) since July 2012.

As part of my volunteer goal I volunteered at the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina last week. It was such an awesome and rewarding experience as always and I wrote a blog post to share with everyone the process! You can read my blog post on what it’s like to volunteer at the food bank here. I am planning on volunteering again on wednesday February 6th. You should join me!

In addition, this month I started to chat with the Meals on Wheels of Wake County organization and plan to do some work with that great organization this year too! Stay tuned for more info on that later this year!

Ok, now for the bad.

My goal of watching the entire series of Friends this year is off to a very slow start. We really should be around the episode 20 mark at this time and we are stalled at episode 5. This really isn’t my wife’s fault. We watched episodes on 3 nights and every time I fell asleep! So we are a little short on that goal but I am reminding myself the reason for the goal to begin with: to spend time with my wife.

This month, we had 2 date nights! And a week long vacation! And our monday night ritual of watching the Bachelor is still intact! And we also went to a totally radical 80’s party together!

And she humored me for this picture before the Patriots game (despite her claustrophobia)!

And she comforted me after the Patriots lost with her amazing ability to be positive, keep things in perspective, and knack for knowing when to let me vent about an underperforming team in the AFC championship game.

But the best part of the month for me was last weekend when for a brief but amazing 2 hours we had absolutely nothing to do, nowhere to go, and we just hung out while the kids played quietly. Is that heaven? I think so.

So that’s my month. Jam-packed with awesomeness! And I feel good about my progress so far. How are you doing with your goals?
