One of the highlights of our trip to Hawaii last month was our trip up Mauna Kea on the big island of Hawaii. While most of the attention right now is on the erupting Mt Kilauea, Mauna Kea is a dormant volcano also on the island of Hawaii. Its peak is 4,207 m (13,802 ft) above sea level, making it the highest point in the state of Hawaii and the second-highest point above sea level of any island on Earth (Carstensz Pyramid in New Guinea is the highest). But here’s the deal, most of the mountain is under water and when you measure Mauna Kea from its base, this bad boy is over 10,000 m (33,000 ft) tall and is the tallest mountain on Earth.

Reaching the summit has 2 requirements—neither which we were able to satisfy. First, you need a 4-wheel drive vehicle (which our rented minivan was not) and secondly, due to the altitude, they do not recommend anyone under 13 to hike past 10,000 ft above sea level.

After a steep drive to the Visitor Information Station which is also known as The Onizuka Center for International Astronomy, we did the short 15-minute hike up “Sunset Hill”, a popular summit slightly short of 10,000 ft above sea level where stargazers and sunset watchers venture.

This little hike was a perfect time for me to put my new Insta360 One video camera to use. I got this camera for my birthday a couple of months ago and am looking forward to many more opportunities to capture a full panoramic video view of some of the amazing things our family experiences. I hope you enjoy the video!
