A Way for Blockbuster Video to Make Some Last Minute Money

Blockbuster

So Blockbuster is closing its doors for good. It seems like this is maybe 3 years later than most Americans would have thought. Back in the day, and by “the day” I mean pre-2000, Blockbuster was THE place to see movies not in the theatres. It was a time where friday night meant stopping at Blockbuster, picking up a couple of movies on VHS, waiting in a line that seemed a mile long, and then enjoying the magic of cinema on our 27″ tube televisions! While I don’t miss the audio and video quality or the challenge to “Be kind and rewind”, those years of moving watching represent formulative years to my movie watching education. There is a high level of nostalgia for those times. The same way I like to listen to 80’s on 8 on my XM Radio or look up old SNL skits on Hulu. Which brings me to a quick way for Blockbuster to make some quick money while they are liquidating their stock and closing down their stores.

Again, it’s all about the data

Blockbuster has a lot of data that is very valuable to the nostalgia section of my brain. They know exactly which movies I watch at what time in my life. For example, they may know that I rented the Garbage Pail Kid movie in 1994 one drunk night in college. They know that I rented Youngblood (the best hockey movie ever) 4 times before buying it used from Blockbuster. My point is they have history of my movie watching and that is incredibly valuable to me. I would pay for that data. And if it had a decent interface displaying it, I would pay a little bit more. Even better, I bet if I gave them my name and old college apartment address they could pull all that info pretty easily.

I would pay $9.99 for a downloadable spreadsheet. How about you?
